Police Raid Ariya Global Hotel in Okuku Amid Allegations of Gay Wedding

Okuku, Osun State – On May 5th, 2024, the town of Okuku was thrust into controversy when police raided Ariya Global Hotel in response to an alleged gay wedding being held at the venue. The secretive event, which attracted attendees from across the state, provoked outrage and a swift response from local authorities.

Reports indicate that concerned residents, alarmed by the nature of the gathering, tipped off the police, citing the event as a violation of the community’s deeply held cultural and traditional values. In Nigeria, homosexuality is not only socially stigmatized but also criminalized under the law.

The operation, led by DSP Emmanuel Ajayi, resulted in the arrest of several lecturers and students from Osun State University, Okuku Campus. The hotel owner, Mr. Kukoyi Adebanjo, was also taken into custody.

During a press conference following the raid, DSP Ajayi stated that the police acted on credible intelligence to enforce the state’s laws prohibiting same-sex unions and related activities. “We had reliable information about the event and intervened to uphold the law and protect our community’s cultural integrity,” Ajayi said. “Those who violate the law will be held accountable.”

The raid and arrests have sparked strong reactions in Okuku, with many residents praising the police for their prompt action. Community leaders have also voiced their support, stressing the importance of maintaining cultural norms and legal standards.

Chief Abifarin Samuel, a respected local figure, remarked, “Our community has always upheld strong moral values, and we cannot support activities that contradict our traditions.” As the investigation continues, the suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be charged in court soon
